Ok, so I moved a while back and all my Legacy stuff has been in boxes.  I got the LCS WiFi module a few months ago but haven't had a chance to work with it until now.

I'm basically working with this on the workbench....no track attached just yet.

So, I was able to successfully connect to my Legacy base via a Serial connection.  Pulled up the engine data and even did a database backup...yeah!

Now, on to the wiz bang WiFi module.  Setup it up as instructed (power, PDI cable, Base setting, Access point setting, etc.).  Was able to find the Legacy WiFi network and connect to it with my laptop.  Made the connection setting change to WiFi in the LSU app.  At the bottom of the LSU screen is says Wi-Fi: Connected Base: Connected so it appears I have a good connection via the WiFi module.

However, when I try to do something (like click on the Engine Data tab) via the LSU app, I get a "Read Failed" message.  The Status at the bottom then changes to "Error - Read failed".

The red PDI light on the WiFi module stays lit continuously which, according to the manual, indicates a problem with "the PDI cabling or the command base" but doesn't say what to do about it.  I'm pretty sure there isn't a problem with the command base since the serial connection via LSU worked fine.  Also, when I try to load any data, the green wifi light doesn't do anything (not sure if it should).  It does however blink when I first connect to it.

I apologize that I'm a little late to the game with this and perhaps this has already been addressed....but, any suggestions are appreciated.

I think I have v1.51 currently but now my Cab2 won't come on.  It has been sitting in it's box for a little over a year (I did take the batteries out when I packed it up).  It came on shortly after I set it up today but now it won't come on at all.  I tried new alkaline batteries with no luck.

I started all this with the intention to go to 5.2 which I haven't yet accomplished....so that could be the problem with the WiFi.  I did make a cab2 module with v5.2 but I can't load it because the Cab2 won't come on.

Any problem with taking the base to v5.2 first knowing that I can't yet upgrade the Cab2?

Well, other than sending it to Lionel, all I can think of is making absolutely sure the batteries are 1.5 v under load and installed the right way. I don't know about the reset button underneath or if it resets anything or when. Now that you have a base, make a cab update and try the update procedure. Push hard on the ctc button and hold it for a few seconds while holding set with the update module inserted.

Of course you can use your iPad to run trains without the cab till it's fixed. That's probably the future.

Thanks Guys!

I'm going to theorize that this was caused by the charging unit.  This 990 was one of the early ones off the line.  However, my original rechargeable batteries always worked fine so I never sent it in to have the charging unit fixed.  When I set this up yesterday, I put those original batteries in and tried to charge them.  The lights on the based flashed red together (not alternating) but I couldn't find any documentation of what that meant.  So, I'm guessing it meant that that something was wrong with the batteries or the Cab2...and perhaps it fried something in the Cab2.

Off to Lionel.
