I would definitely oil and at minimal check that it's been greased. We've seen more than a share of engines reported on this forum lacking lubrication.
Since I've seen stuff come from the factory bone dry, I at least check the grease for any gears and lightly oil all the axles and pickups of a new locomotive. As for break in, that's what running it is for, We don't need no stinkin' breakin!
thank you.john you need to appearon henning train weekly more often.you need your own segment.genius at work.
I agree with Marty and John. I've seen few gearboxes with adequate grease. In most cases the grease is in a blob stuck to the side of the gearbox and not even touching the gears.
Mth suggests adding .5-1.0 ml of grease in the gearbox. This seems to be a good guide.
As far as break in goes. After lubing, I'll run the loco by itself forward for 5-10 minutes and then reverse 5-10 minutes.
During this time I watch for any issues that may require a warranty repair.
