I bought Lionel Genset Kansas City Southern (6-38546) about a month ago.  I would like to sell it to get something else.  It has about 10 hours on it and everything works great and there is nothing wrong with it.  I just have no loyalties to this road name.  I've had it for sale on this forum for a week and have had no interest.  I want to net $600 for it, and that means after fees if I sell it on ebay.  If I can't do that I will keep it.  I've seen that Lionel gensets have sold on ebay in other road names, but there is no history for gensets in this road name.  I've seen the UP's go for over $900, but mine is not a Vision Line.  My question is, what do you think it would sell for on ebay if I were to sell it there?  I know I can do a reserve, but I think that turns people off and it costs more.

You might have seen this already but one of these Gensets sold here last year on the buy/sell forum for $550 (or maybe somewhat less if the seller and buyer negotiated, shipping was included in price):

I remember being interested in one of these (but in Santa Fe livery) until I found out they don't include the VL smoke features. Back when they were released I think that the street price was around $600 -$649. MSRP was $799.

Based on what I know about this general run of Gensets you'd probably have to wait it out for someone looking for this road name if you want to net $600. Listings on fleaBay can be misleading but show one of these Gensets withdrawn from sale last month after being listed at $899, which was obviously too high.

Be prepared. Someone is going to tell you that it's worth "what someone is willing to pay for it". Which has to be one of the all-time most un-helpful sentences ever spoken. You are after an opinion, not the painfully obvious.

But, I have no idea! You're welcome.

(I use eBay as a price guide starting point; I check both active and completed listings for a sense of the market.)

Yes, over $900 for a Union Pacific Genset.  The Kansas City Genset is not a highly desirable Locomotive, if you get $500 for your KC Genset you would be doing good.  Try listing it on Ebay for $700 or best offer, you will get more sets of eye balls there.   Just remember your item is used..!!!
