Our Layout takes place in 1971, in western Nebraska between the Sand hills and Badlands.  Barney was born in 1910 in Alliance Ne and past-way in 1978.  Barney is my wife's great uncle and they are all related to Buffalo Bill Cody clan.  Barney lived in the sand hills a bachelor his whole life.  His mansion was a two room shack with the basic amenities.  The sign posted by the tracks states:  WANTED, ONE HANSOM WOMEN, MUST OWN RIFLE.  The one loyal pal he has is Molly the mule.  Besides receiving a paper once a week from a friendly conductor, most of Barneys conversations are with his mule and cattle.

The layout is a total 33 inches squared,  The track is MTH Scale track in O-31 curves.  I power the layout with a MTH z-1000 or the Lionel cw-80.  Our proto-sound 1 engines do not like the cw-80.  The shack, retaining walls, and the hills are all scratch built.  The sand is real Nebraska sand ( it's easy to come by out here).  The state tree (windmill) was bought on ebay.  I did add the lumber, ladder, pump shaft and all the weathering too it.  The horse tank is a fish oil pill lid.  Sorry for all the photos but I need to pick 3 good ones,  Hope you enjoy.  Nick

Thanks for the hints and comments.  As far as old branch lines the main RR in this area is the BN.  By 1970 UP and the BN had taken over the state and had abandon most of the little lines.  Plus, I like the colorful locomotive on the layout.  Also no tree's in the sandhills, so no logging trains or narrow gauge, just  coal.  I know the rails are shinny,  I am not sure if I will keep this track,  I have the go ahead for a bigger layout and I want to use something else besides Fastrack.  I think I will use Ross's stuff.  This layout will be given to a old gentleman that had to remove his old layout.  So some postwar stuff will look good and the use of a light transformer will not get in the way.  I know I could of done a few more things but I am running out of time, the next 2 weeks are full so I needed to post it now.   Nick
