I hope the new year is treating everyone well. Last week's photo of a train station window in Kansas City, taken by Kent, reminded me that I have a similar shot. This is in the Transportation Center in Champaign/Urbana, IL. It serves the busses and Amtrak on the Illini route. The Illinois Central RR station still stands a block away, but is used by another business now.

I also realized I have this video of the oscillating light from this observation car at the Monticello Railroad Museum. If you have never seen one this close, it is really cool.

So it isn't the light that moves, but the reflector behind it. Wink

That's the beginning to my year! Please feel free to share any shots of the Real world you find interesting!

Hi there, Smile

I don't have any pics to post of my own. I wish I was able to get my own pics of the ARR steam engine move yesterday. The local newspaper sent a photographer to the ARR Media Event. Local tv crews were also on hand and KTUU - Channel 2 News, will have a segment tomorrow on the steamer. 1-5-12

Here's a link to the Newspaper photo spread.

Gee Tim, maybe we're on a roll here! Let's keep putting up some cool window shots, eh? Last week I passed on posting "best of past year" photos, but this week looks like I'll be doing a version of that. Every year I go to Chicago for the annual Center for Railroad Photography & Arts convention. They have an annual photo contest. This year it's being judged by Richard Steinheimer's widow. Not much money in it if you win, but I'll enter again this year. I think I've posted at least two of these three before. I'd call the competition "open class pro", (Steve Crise, Howard Ande, Keith Burgess just to name a few) but I think the shots I sent in are least solid. (1) Conductor looks bored as he waits for an e/b to pass by near DeSmet, SD. (2) Excited children exchange waves with the crew of UP 844 at Atchison, KS. (3) BNSF switch job returns back to the yard over the Falls Trestle, Sioux Falls, SD.

I can imagine how exciting it must be for kids to watch a train go by and have the crew wave back at them. That's a great photo.

I would like to be a kid again and stand on the platform and wave at the crew! Now one has to be so careful with picture taking etc. The innocence of yonder years is not like what it used to be.
