I have noticed that Atlas has an O72 Wye switch. I am using Lionel regular O tubular track. Can these 2 brands be attached as is or do they have to be reworked in some manner?

Yes you just need to buy the transition rail joiners part number 6095
Thanks, that will help a lot and is a very easy fix.
You would also most likely need to raise the height of the Atlas O track to match the Lionel track. Most modelers do this with cork roadbed.
I would use more than just the switch. At least a section of atlas track on either end. The change from the round profile track to the flat top Atlas is going to make the train bump, and the O72 Wye isnt that big of a switch, so you're going to upset the train and then bang it over the frog of the switch.
The O72 Wye is also only half of a curve. You need the atlas O72 half curves to make it a full 22.5 degree turn.
Alternatively, you can also use a Ross 22.5 degree wye (11.25 degrees to each side) and the 'TR' tracks or custom cut an O72 curve to complete the segment of sectional track.
