before I scratch build something, I thought I'd ask. Does anyone make the modern type reefers used on the newest UP chilled express produce train? (whatever it's called?)

The refrig unit is on an end platform and looks like a module that's added on?

I see this in smaller scales, and maybe I'd just modify the ends of older ones?? I thought they were scrapped?

Fyi Joe,

That photo isn't the newest of the prototype reefers.  That's a traditional 57' version with the motor driven cooling unit removed and replaced with a modern truck style refrigeration unit.  The most modern cars are the Trinity 64' reefers.  Pictures can be found on any number of web sites.

At this point, you'll have to scratch them.  There are two versions available in HO, from Exactrail and BLMA.  My general understanding is the BLMA car is considered more accurate in HO circles.

I have some of that type and some of the newer style with the reefer unit mounted outside in HO scale and they are neat looking cars. That type of car is probably better suited to HO or N scale as they normally run long distances from large industries. The earlier era Weaver O scale reefers are a nice car and were used in the era when smaller shippers still used rail service so would be easier to incorporate into an O scale layout....DaveB

Thanks guys for the information. I never knew that there were modern refrigerated cars until I read this thread. I thought all perishable goods were exclusively transported by refrigerated intermodal containers on today’s railroads. I had the Weaver 57’ refrigerated freight car but sold it when I decided to focus on modern freight cars.

Joe, if you want just the refrigeration units, here are some links to the Carrier & Thermo-King units in 1:50 scale.

Whoa!

Thank you!

Joe the early cars I saw in Orlando brought french fries to the McDonald cold storage warehouse , both BNSF and Simplot , the early BNSF had a rounded roof profile , I make resin castings for these cars , I have been making them for 7 yrs. Nestle' had these too. The rust forming on the outside of the Simplot car was due to condensation.

This referencing my above post forgot to add this dialogue.

I got three of the pieces in the other week and forgot to post. They look great but they were discontinued, so the back-ordered ones were cancelled. I was hoping for many more.

Now I'll have to find or build the cars to match them. I do have the older style Lionel ones that I could update with these on the ends.

Joe,

That’s good. I also came across this old photo of an Atlas 45’ refrigerated highway trailer that also has these refrigeration units. Atlas sold these trailers separately & also included them in their 89’ flat cars over the last few years. You could contact Atlas to see if they have some extra parts to sell you.

These are just my opinion,

Thanks,

Naveen Rajan

Looks like it's time to break out the RTV and casting resin since they're discontinued.

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Be very quieeeet!

I'm huntin' Rabbbittts!

(Let's keep this between us).

Martin , thanks for the compliment . The end refrigeration unit is a cast piece I made from many photos of the real thing sitting on a siding here in Orlando at the McDonalds cold storage , I used a roof walk for the platform and brass for the handrails and the steps and ladders . This was done over 10 yrs ago when these cars first came on the scene. There is a tank also under the platform .

Here is a picture of another cryo car for shipping french fries from Idaho , do not see Simplot anymore atleast here.I use a Weaver 57 ft mech. for comparison to the modern car , again the masters were from measurements on a car sitting on a siding.

These are resin cast sides , ends ,roof and floor . I am remaking a better master for the roof on the BNSF unit as the roof has less curvature . The BNSF was one of my first attempts at resin casting.

Thanks for showing the rest of us what can be done.  The refrigeration unit looks especially tricky to make.

I apologize if you were talking to Scratchbuilder!

I always want to learn more so if you were talking to me, than yes, I'd like any info on them.

The scratch built cars above look perfect to me. I should bribed Bernie and took that off his hands when he offered. If that BNSF model was just a first attempt, I may have to quit. I'm not sure I'll ever get that talented.

It takes a ton of work to build something like that, not to mention the skills.

It doesn't matter if you need some info I will try to help. Refriderated units are one of my favorite topics whether it's semi trailers or reefer cars they always interested me. It was neat to listen to him talk how they changed the reefer units. We had lots of time we were in a rain delay at the Cardnails game made the delay go by fast. If you need some pic of a intermodal reefer units let me know I pull them once in awhile. I mostly pull the std ones 40' and 20'

It's only an extra 7'....  And don't you have centerbeams on your layout too?

But yes, the 57' reefers are the ones that have been converted as shown in the first post.

I do have a Centerbeam, but it's converted MTH 3-Rail so sits a bit high on it's trucks at the moment. I was thinking that a 64' Trinity at the correct height might not have enough swing in the trucks for the 36" radius curves of the layout I'm building up in my loft (attic? Not sure what the US word is), and with the trucks inset frm each end a bit too, it might throw the couplers out too wide on the curves as well. But hey, I'd love to be proved wrong!!
