I noticed it has 0-24 variable voltage, and Lionel transformers typically go from 0-18. Is this safe to run my LionChief trains on?

I wouldn't even consider it. It's a very expensive transformer for only 64 watts output.
You should be able to find a set break-up CW on eBay for $40-$50, for 80 watts output.

I grabbed one cheap for $25. But now I'm not so certain I should use it. Does anyone use one of these?
I'm wondering, if you don't use the "boost" button, it's only 18 volts output.
You can use it in a pinch. I'll bet that the 24 volt rating is also open circuit w/ no load.

Thanks. I was wondering if that perhaps the 24 volts was due to the boost. I may buy a volt meter and dial in the voltage to confirm. Will also look into other transformers as I would like to run a couple LionChiefs at the same time.

Well I couldn't shake the notion that I could ruin the new LC trains, so I grabbed a CW 80 off eBay for only $10 more. I guess I'll repurpose the Trottlepack for duty somewhere else on the layout (or sell it).
