I would like to convert two or maybe three of the MTH 50' Airslide hoppers to 2 rail.

Questions:

1. Has anyone done this?

2. Can Atlas trucks be used? if so what size 70 ton or 100 ton?

3. Are the MTH Airslide hoppers equipped with Kadee mounting holes or will I have to drill holes for Kadee installation?

Lastly; I chose the MTH Airlslide hoppers because they look great and remind me of the Walthers HO airslide hoppers. Also the newer releases of Airslide hoppers have separately applied grab irons.

Hi Curtis,

Yes, I did this MTH airslide 2-Rail conversion, see my post in the link below for all the details:

These cars use 100T trucks.  I used Atlas 100T trucks but I also modified the MTH bolsters to match the Atlas "button-style" bolster pin.  I also found that I needed to mill away some of the angled frame gusset supports (photos in the link below) to provide enough wheel clearance to keep the wheels from rubbing on them.  Kadee mount was already on the car.

Thank you for the pictures and the response. This car looks great I may try to convert a couple of them some day hopefully within a year.

Interestingly enough, the RailKing versions of these are so similar in size, you'd be hard pressed to notice the difference in a train rolling by (although there are more molded-in details on the RK model). I have both Premier and RailKing versions in the UP paint scheme and if you glance at them quickly, you'd not know which was which.

Examples: In all cases, the slightly larger car is Premier.

The differences are fairly easy to see in these photos. Rolling by in a train (and you didn't know that both types would be present), not so much.
