I recently bought a plated Santa Fe F7 with scale wheels. It has a fixed pilot and what looks to be a more prototypical sized  coupler on the back. I'd like to use that F7 with a set of  A&B F3s with hi rail wheels. Problem is the coupler on the F7 being smaller it does hook up with the larger coupler on the B unit but I have had a couple of times where it's disconnected. I took a look at the trucks on the F3s and they have completely different truck & coupler setup than the F7. What I'd like to do is buy scale wheel trucks from MTH that'll fit that coupler on the F7 but I can't figure out the part number. Does anyone know what MTH part number for scale wheel trucks? The F3 B unit I have is unpowered and the f3 A unit is powered so I'm looking for both powered and unpowered scale wheel trucks.

I would approach "the problem" differently. Trying to mate scale coupler to non-coupler- fix that.

If you want to fix the wheels and make it "high rail wheels" OK that's a different problem IMO.

Again, the fact is, we know you have 2 rail /3 rail capable trucks, that support EITHER coupler style and either wheelset style.

I'm in the unique position of being able to help you out here. I have a CNW F7 ABBA set. The ABA set has scale wheels and couplers. The extra B-unit was available in Hi-Rail only. I did a truck swap on one end of each of the B-units to allow the consist to run. I would advise you to order a hi-rail coupler if you can find the right one (you may be able to cut down a weaver hi-rail coupler bar from a freight car as an alternative. Your unit is the second-generation scale-wheel B-unit that isn't designed for a pass-through connection. Mine is first-generation with the pass-through connections.

As for the wheels, I'll check my B-units again to see if they had the 3/2 swappable trucks. If they do, I can send you the hi-rail ones so you can swap them out on your B-Units in exchange for your scale wheels. Here's a photo of the ABBA set on the AGHR layout. The connection between the B-units uses Hi-rail coupling and hi-rail wheels.

Thank you for this post!! Didn't know the couplers were interchangeable. That solved the problem as I had ordered the scale couplers earlier in the week I just could't figure out how to get them installed.

Thanks Again!!

Thanks to Vernon I was able to get the scale couplers installed on the existing trucks. I thought I'd take a few pictures along the way to show how it was done. You need to take the cover off the bottom of the truck that holds the wheel set in place.  On the B unit there were 3 or 4 screws that need to be removed, then the cover can be taken off. I took the trucks off the frame of the B unit but in looking back at this I don't I needed to do that. The powered unit is more involved as there were more screws and you do need to drop the truck if you've got a proto coupler unless you want to cut the wires. Once you have the cover off remove the wheel set closest to the coupler. Take notice of the position of the flanges on the axels as you'll need to get them in the same position to get the cover back on. Once the wheel set is out you'll see a screw holding the existing coupler in, take that out pop the new coupler in and that's pretty much it.

Thanks again to Vernon for letting me know what I was missing!
