A few weeks ago, I was able to stop in and see my sister and her family in St. Louis.  My nephew loves playing with trains and watching train videos on my phone.  While we were relaxing on the couch, he slapped together this:

I LOVE this layout.  It is much smarter than at first glance.  With just one crossover and two turnouts, you can take a consist on a myriad of paths and directions.

I've decided to build this out of O-27 and O-36 and find a way to work it into my (someday) permanent layout.  I realize I may have to take some liberty and with all the S-curves the consist will be limited to smaller and simpler stuff, but that's just fine by me!  I'm starting the SCARM version as we speak.  I hope to have a first draft done this afternoon.  My nephew's name is Alex.  I'd love your help naming this.  Here are some I've come up with:

  • Alex's Run
  • Alex Loop
  • Alex's Trail

Depending on the actual equipment you end up running, I think you might be surprised by the "S" curves. I've seen a lot of smaller trains run through "S" curves on You Tube with no trouble at all. And even if you only get to run a trolley, I think it's a great idea to build it for a little different sort of fun.

So...this is harder than I expected.  I can see two different radii in his design.  I was hoping to do that in O-27 and O-36 tubular (more toy like).  I think the only tubular system that has those is Menard's...but they aren't in SCARM.  So, I tried to do it all with O-27 and this is what I got:

I might try doing this with Atlas to see what that looks like.  SCARM file of Lionel O-27 attached as well.

Yeah, I was thinking about something toy-like (semi-scale?) anyway with probably a switcher and a gondola and a caboose like he has on his...

You can use another track type of O36 and mix it with the Lionel O for fitting. use fastrack O36 or Lionel Super O from the SCARM Lionel track library.
