Here is the start of my new layout. Benchwork is from Mianne Woodworking with 1/2 plywood and 1" foam on top. Track is all K-Line Shadow Rail, Snap-Track or RMT Snap Track. the crossover from outside loop 0-42 curves to inside loop 0-31 curves is ROSS TINPLATE # 4 switches. There will be 2 crossovers. Nothing else done yet. I hope to have some sidings and there will be a hand built scale 24" long CPR Wood Trestle on the inner most track under the window.

Looking good...love the hollow middle for easy access..
Very nice, looking good. I like the look of the snap track and heard it works very well. I have never tried the foam board, I'm guessing it quiets the sound pretty well.
Well Jeff, I'm in an apartment condo so I cut 2" rubber squares and put one under each leg. Since the room is carpeted, sound should not be a problem for me or my neighbors.
Icansellyou - the middle is open for access. The table on this end is going to be a 30" long drop section when everything is done. I'm 75 and too old for a lot of crawling around. This will be my last layout built. (I hope)
I used Mianne Framework as it goes together with a screwdriver. NO NOISE. The plywood is screwed down with as few # 6 x 3/4 wood screws as possible. The foam
just sits on the plywood. The track will eventually be hot glued to the foam about every 6th or 7th piece of track. That and the track wiring will keep it in place.
Looking good there, Larry! Keep us up-to-date on the progress. My guess is the vast majority of us can relate to the modest space and it's nice to see what you (and others) are doing to meet that challenge.
Larry,
That is really nice. I am especially looking forward to seeing your bridge that you are going to build. I need to build one and am shamelessly looking for ideas to copy. I hope you will post pictures of the layout as you progress.
Thanks,
Ed
Ed - the trestle is already built. It was on my last 2 layouts. It was built by my Best Friend and Companion, Beverley Unsworth. Her son John is the Chief Bridge Engineer for the Canadian Pacific Railway and supplied us with the plans for a standard CPR Wood Trestle 96 Real ft long and 72 ft high . Is was nailed and glued together with hardwood cut by a cabinet maker to exact scale dimensions. Here ,is a partial picture of it on the last layout. (When I was in a house)

Great layout! There's a certain O gauge train magazine that I wish showed more bedroom sized layouts for us retired folks that don't own a huge basement.

maybe we will see this one in a train magazine.
It's a nice size.
I agree Charlie! I love to see those huge layouts, but it makes me want to sell out of the hobby. I don't have the room and probably never will.
Thanks for sharing these pics and info. I have built a similar setup in my previous apartment and really enjoyed operating it.
I would like to know how high off the ground it is?
Isn't that pre-fab benchwork expensive? Figure you do want to build it quickly and quitely, being in an apt condo. But is actually woth the cost?
Layout does look very nice for the space.
Martin - It is 40" to the top pf the framework, plus 1/2" ans 1" for the foam.
Is is quite expensic=ve in a way. A local fellow in Calgary who builds layouts said my cost $ 805.00 plus UPS was about what he would have charged for a custom layout with the plywood top included. But, for 3 weeks he was too busy to talk to me, so I ordered from Mianne Woodwork. The framework took me 8 1/2 hrs to put up ( I'm 75 now)
If I ever was to move and build another layout, I would undo all the framework and take it with me. It came in 2 boxes 8" square and 4 ft long.
Larry, could you email me a list of Mianne benchwork pieces you used? BTW, I'm using Atlas O track. Also, did you draw a trackplan?
Mike - I sent my room diagram to Mianne. Ted then did a table I wanted 30 deep on the long straight wall and 36" tapering to 0 on the other wall. The end is 30" deep The plywood overhangs the 30" frame by 6" at the back and the plywood is 40" onn the 36 deep table. The Framework could not go wall to wall as the room has hot water baseboard heating on 3 walls. My friend ROD STEWART drew me up the basic plan on RR Track and I only modified it slightly.
