So measured the room my current table is in, to figure out what my final expansion would look like. The room is 11x14 with two doors (one 3', the other 5') on the long walls. Realistically a bit more than half the room is available for a layout. Attached is a schematic, with the green shaded area what is available to build. My goal -if possible- is to have three trains in continuous motion on loops (two on a main level,  one on a raised level*). Also to have a modest switchyard if possible for storing rolling stock as well as for breaking up the monotony of circular running. Is that possible with this space?

*I should also mention that on the longer table, I plan to build a subway underneath the table, and have a station on the other side that shuttles people back and forth. I would have a reversing loop on the subway, but I'd need to build a ramp on the other table (I figured along the wall so it's out of the way) which will eat up some space.20180129_093659

Looks like a good start.  One point, which I am sure others will agree, would be access to the upper right corner.  Do you have plans for keeping Murphy away from it ?.....LOL

Yeah, I'll kick his arse if he shows his face.

In all seriousness, that would probably be a good place to throw a honking huge Menards building. I'm fine if I have to give that space up ... particularly if I can keep the other "requirements". The other possibility is that when I throw in the subway station under that table, I make sure it's especially reinforced and I'll have to walk the table. The room doesn't have a finished ceiling (it's an add-on tool shed attached to my workshop - both are unfortunately not climate controlled) so at least I have beams to hold on to.

seems like you can make the most of this space by encroaching a little bit on the door openings? and if you curve the islands you might be able to squeeze your aisle just slightly if it opens back up to have a larger viewing are in the elbow of the layout. something like this? you can use o54 and o42 on each of the legs and large curves in the back. you might have to stack a reverse loop on the bottom leg to maximize your curves

Thanks!  I can certainly encroach a bit on the 5' doors as they open outward. The 3' door area will be a bit more problematic, though in all actuality, I can remove that door with no issues. I like the idea of curving the islands, and by the time I get to build this, I hope my carpentry skills are up to par!

Wow, Deuce... not completely finished with the 4x8 yet and already planning a major expansion!!! You are definitely on the slippery slope and stepping on a banana peel. Welcome to the club

I can see the headline now - Wife Sets Up Metal Detector at Front Door to Prevent Train Infestation in Home!!!

Good luck with your planning.

Paul,

It's unhealthy ... I know! Fortunately, the workshop and tool shed area are mine (wife has her sunroom), so if they get infested, it's ok! What damage it does to the checkbook though will be the basis for some serious discussions!
