Trying to figure out who made this early FT set. It looks like it might be 17/64. Last time I saw gearbox construction like this was on my Fred Icken USH UP 4-8-2. Talk about overbuilt. Drivetrain turns very smoothly. Looks like the rectifier for the field wound motor originally lived in the B unit, but now there a bridge rectifier in the A unit.

How about Central locomotive works body, and some sort of scratch built mechanism? (cTr...Choose the Right)
Mr. Bloy,
i think that you are right. It has a cast nose but thin brass sides which was pretty common on CLW.

Finally figured it out. It only took two years. This FT set comes from a Wentzco kit. I have never seen a set from this era without the roof radiators for the dynamic brake system. Contrast this with the photo of the Adams & Son ATSF version.Yep ACL did not have the dynamic brake system so this model is accurate. Oddly these purple beast mainly hauled freight ; must have been very interesting to see purple locos in the early 40s.
Maybe Carie Williams or someone else can provide info on Wentzco?

Wentz was an attorney in San Leandro, CA .....and a big O scaler ...he made numerous pieces over the years ...but the FT with the power truck was his most successful item .. advertised 1948-50 in MR ...
When the Atwater / GMC F3 came out ...the Wentzco FT sales fell off ...
Your drive is a much more serious upgrade from the standard powered truck .

Carey,
Thank you for the info. Very good info.

Looks like I was wrong. The consensus from those in the know now think it is an Adam’s hybrid.
