We have a friend that needed a new layout. His current O 42 on a sheet of plywood was losing his interest.  So we came up with a plan and my son and I decided to start to build him his new layout.  He enjoys just watching the engines move, no fancy scenery, we will some time put a few buildings and lights.  It will have two separate loops, the outside is O-48 with O-42 for the middle, shadowing the outer line.  We did cut down his sheet of plywood to start the frame build.  It will be 5ft 6 inch by 15 and a half feet long.  Like a odd shape dog bone, no switches and he has a MTH 4000 to power it.  The Z-4000 will be placed in the center of the dog bone.  The top is 1/4 plywood with 1/2 sound board.  It need to be light enough for me to carry down the basement for him.  It will also be in three sections so it will be easy for his family to move in the future if needed.  The top will then be finished with a carpet of his choosing.  We will use a 1/8 hardi board painted neutral to dress up the edges.

Thought we would share a few in progress shots of the layout.  Will update as we progress, hope to have it finished this month.

Here are some more photos of the updated layout.  I did take a section over to my friends hose and guess what, it was not going to make it down the stairs.  So back home I went and altered the two larger sections.  I split them down the middle and added a spine to it.  Then 4 bolts hold the sections together.  It did make it a lot lighter and smoother to handle.  We did get 1/4 plywood glued on then the sound board is glued onto that.  Its actually strong, my 200 lb butt walked across it with no problems.  The edges will be added now and painted Lionel Orange with a Lionel blue stripe.  The seems will have Diamond plating to cover them.  It will go with the shiny Lionel Templates.  My son and I did do a quick set up of the table outside, it will not look level in my driveway but it is.  We still need to add the platform for the MTH z4000, it will go by the center of the layout about 8 inches lower then the top.  We still have a few braces for the legs to add too.  Will post updates when I start the edges.

So I have finished most of the table, have the green carpet cut, now we just need to lay track and wires.  I did get the table set up in its spot in the basement.  I painted the edges Lionel Blue and Orange and used diamond plating for all seams and corners.  The shelf on the wall was the 1st step in building so we could get the trains off the old layout.  The Oak shelf on the layout will be mounted in the center of the new layout to mount the Z4000.  I hope to have him running trains by this Sunday.

Running engines, at least on the outer line.  I still need to find 4 more curves.  A few shots of the Fastrack on the felt and the transformer in place.  A little fact about the new owner of this layout.  If you see a Union Pacific engine with the Flag on its side is was designed by this fellow as well as the "Building America" logo.  So the inaugural run was with a GE UP engine with his flag on it.
