Hello, like several other posters, I'd love some help designing a new layout. My wife and I just contracted for a new house build, and the large 5th bedroom over the garage is going to be my train room. I've never built a layout this large, everything I've built has been a relatively small table-top layout. I do know some of my preferences:
- I will be using MTH ScaleTrax
- Prefer #4 and/or #6 turnouts. Some curve replacement turnouts can be used if necessary to make the plan fit.
- Prefer O-72 minimum diameter, I could go down to O-54 in places if absolutely necessary. I will be using flex-track rather than sectional in most areas.
- a 2-track mainline, at least for the majority of the layout, would be nice.
- Some sort of height variation / "multi-level," limited to 2-2.5% grade. If possible, all "levels" will be interconnected, except for the possibility of a subway and/or elevated line I may add.
- Mostly rural scenery, with at least one "city" scene.
- Bidirectional / reversible running, options for continuous running.
- Some sort of engine facility.
Theme : modern. Eastern roads (CSX, NS, and Amtrak). Also the occasional steam excursion train may be spotted.
We should close by the end of August, so I have plenty of time to dream up my dream layout. I like the idea of an around-the walls layout, but I'm not opposed to a large table-top style layout with access points either. Duck-unders / access holes aren't a problem for me (I'm 27 - no back problems yet!)
The room is nominally 20' x 16' with an 11' dormer on the front. I've attached my rendering of the floor plan in RR-Track as both the .rrt and a .jpeg file. I may have too many wants with not enough space, and I recognize that. Any ideas you guys have would be awesome!
