Well, I have decided that waiting for my youngest daughter to find a home and get her stuff out of my attic is going to take too long.  So the basement it is.  My layout is going to be rather small, 3' x 12'.  I will be running smaller equipment such as RMT Beeps, Lionel 41 style switchers and for passenger service an RMT Buddy RDC.  I would like to have a raised track on a trestle with an MTH or Lionel #60 trolley running.

I will also include post-war operating accessories, as many as can be logically fit into the spaces available.

My mindset is a post-war type layout.

So here's what I have come up with so far.  These are two separate ideas.  The lower one shows a long straight track running the length of the layout along the back.  This will be the raised trolley track.  I couldn't figure out how to show that it is raised, so I just drew it over the main track plan.

Finally - someone else with a small layout

Dan- I like the upper plan too. I have a 4 X 8 layout and tried to cram in as much as I could. One of the big frustrations is the length of my sidings. Most are only a few lengths of track (like your lower plan), and it is frustrating when stuff doesn't fit.

Good luck and hope you are running trains soon.

Thanks for being a member if the Small Layout Club Bob.  The last time I had an "O" gauge layout was 1990.  It was 5 x 10.  I crammed as much as I could on that one.  What's nice about a small layout is that alot of attention can be paid to alittle bit of stuff.  Making maintenance and operation simple.  I like simple.  Kind of matches my brain.....LOL

This is my last layout just before dismantling it.  The picture quality is fair.  These were slides, stored in my attic since then, and transferred to my computer a couple of years ago.

Playing around with more designs, I came up with these two.   Not sure why they are so light.  Both are meant for my original space allotment of 3' x 12'.  The lower one uses four O72 switches and one O22.  As before, I would like to fit some operating accessories into the display.  I was thinking that a passenger train could be parked on the main, in both scenarios, while a switcher performs it's duties moving operating cars around.  The upper layout has two reverse loops, allowing a train to traverse the layout in two directions.

Any thoughts on these ?
