The walls have been painted and track lighting installed. Real estate has been secured.

I don't have a diagram or track layout plan yet but am considering going away from my good size stash of traditional Lionel Tubular and instead buy Gargraves Sectional Track for my mainlines.

Appearance is the main motivating factor. As much as I like the traditional tubular - I believe the look may be significantly more appealing to me right now. I can use the tubular for yards and such.

I am also tossing my large collection of Lionel 072 switches and plan to grab some RCS switches.

So let me ask. Anyone make this switch lately? Any concerns or other input you would like to provide? I trust there are no issues with the ease of Gargraves track especially since I will be using sectional pieces. I believe it is practice to solder power to these tracks where needed?

Thank you.

Paul

Since you really like tubular but are looking for a little realism I would suggest K-Line Shadow Rail.  Lots of ties, black center rail and it matches up with Lionel 0 gauge therefore all your switches and remote tracks will work without modifications or dealing with mating pins.  Also all of Lionel's accessories will work without jury rigging.  This includes things like milk car platforms, horse car platforms, etc. will be at the correct height.  The only problem the track is discontinued.  But there is plenty around.  The switches are great with low profile motor boxes and include the non derailing feature.

GG and Ross are my preferences. I have both, plus some from now-defunct Curtis, but they are all to the same format. Before you lay it, spray paint it all in camo brown or even black. Nothing messes up a nice Hi-Rail layout like shiny chrome-plated track (ever seen any in real life?).

Many use solder connections; I did not when I built it back in 1990 era. No problems with the GG type blade connectors in 29 years, but the solder or hidden through-table spade connectors look better.

Easy to use, though I do not bend track except for yard work here and there. All my mainline curves are pre-formed (Curtis) 072's. Many flex track curves I have seen look like...flex track curves. The difference in price is lost in the mists of time.
