I am contemplating a new layout with 2 parallel lines using O54 on the outside and O42 on the inside. What size switches should I use? Also is there a better combination for the curves?
Since you mentioned O42, I assume you mean GarGraves track. Ross O72 switches appear to keep the ovals concentric and the straights parallel. GG O72 switches don't have the same profile, so you'd have to cut some short filler straights. Here's an example:
