Hello everyone.  I am completely new to model train hobbing and could use some help planning my layout.  i am planning to build a modular layout that would be disassembled and stored every year after the holidays because I'm working with limited space.  The system would be constructed of 48" wide X 36" long cases with removable lids.  They would connect to form a platform that can run two trains and two trolleys.  Although I have extensive woodworking skills I need advice on track choices and additional guidance with wiring (ok with house wiring but thats a differnt animal, lol).  Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ron

Hi Ron,

I'm also new to this. There are software packages which will allow you to layout your track on a given size board. I downloaded SCARM (http://www.scarm.info/index_en.html) mainly because it was free and the documentation was pretty easy to follow. It includes most of the major track brands in it. Once installed go to Tools->Toolbox and then select Baseboard (Rectangular) from the drop down box and enter your dimensions. Then start laying out track. A lot of what you can do depends on the track you have. I have Lionel FasTrack so I'm limited to pretty wide O36 curves.
