I won this gem at auction and am happy to have it!

Unfortunately,  the auction pictures didn't show zinc rot on the wheels.   

There's no light in front,  almost like the whole socket is missing.

The mechanism turns by hand with some force.   

I would like this to be a runner.   I have no problem with a resto-mod style overhaul.   I first want to get it going in general.   Can someone remind me where to find instructions for servicing this beauty?  Also, did this have even a 2-position reverse unit?  I don't see a typical tab.  Is there room for a dallee style reverse unit in the shell?  Is there anything that should be replaced as a matter of good practice besides the wheels?

I guess I am looking for thoughts and suggestions to turn this shelf queen into a king of the rails.

I did a writeup on rebuilding the motor from a 257 several years ago, here's a link to the topic. I would definitely recommend replacing the original spur gear (which was made from cheapo fiber back in the day and are usually stripped and missing teeth) with the brass ones that are available.

Good luck with your rebuild! The 257 is a quirky, cartoony, but very fun engine to run with those little 4-wheeled tinplate cars that Lionel made back in the 1920s and early 30s.
