When I install PS2 or 3 into an engine, I usually just do a guess at the stripes on the flywheel. Once I get a speed from the set up, I adjust the number of stripes until it exactly speed matches my fleet. I like the ability to match any engines together, so I try and get it perfect. I can zero in pretty quickly using percentages of speeds and mismatches.

So there was a post a few years back by Dave Hikel on how to figure out the number of stripes needed with a given soundset. You had to have known values that you would plug into the formula to get an answer. It seemed way too difficult for me as I'm usually installing into engines that are G scale, and of different makes and gearing than any standards of MTH's.

My latest will be the NWSL G scale 2 axle power trucks. I believe the motors are different brand than most use. I had to install my own flywheel inside. So I will do my usual guess work to have something to start with for the number of flywheel stripes.

So it has a custom 1" flywheel. The wheels measure 1 1/4" at the tread. I'd guess that the axle gears are just over 1/2" diameter?

It takes about 12  1/4 turns of the flywheel to get the wheels around once. What else can I tell you?

Any guesses at the number of stripes I'll need??

I'm sure I can get comments about my methods but scrapping a tape to get a known result, seems like the best option to me.

Fire away for fun now.

OK, no one wanted to guess. Maybe too many variables?

The used PS2 board set came up in the remote as a Dash 9 soundset. However when I did a feature reset with 5.x, it erased the name. Sugar!

I randomly picked a MTH G scale dash 8 SF to match. I set it at 35 MPH. The new F40PH had to run at 37 MPH to keep pace. Not bad for a simple guess!

For info it just happened to be the middle stripe strip on the included PS2 upgrade tape set. So I need to remove just a few stripes after I see what the correct sound set speed will look like once installed.

Ah well, nobody wanted to play with this but me.
