I have some O27 #5121 and #5122 switches with brown colored controllers without bulbs. I also have some brown MPC era switch controllers with colored lens caps but no bulbs nor sockets inside. How do they light or hold bulbs?

They do neither. The lenses are decorative only.

For those models the bulbs and associated sockets were eliminated as a cost-savings measure.
