Just getting started on my first O-scale layout (using Fastrack). The space is slightly confined with 4' X 10' for main layout, plus shelf space for a yard. Trains enter from the yard via a wye, so direction of travel can be either clockwise or counter clockwise. The mainline I plan will be a loop having two "towns" (on-line industrial areas).

My question is whether to have the two towns situated so they can be serviced by the same train, or have them oriented so one train will need to turn on the wye to service both?

I'm thinking out and back to the first town, yard switching, then out and back to the second. Any suggestions?

Hi DAVIDR,

I would suggest that you run your finger over the track plan and simulate how it can run. That will get it the way you want it. Real trains did both. The furthest town perhaps has something that needs delivery in the closest town. Take empties to the furthest, drop fulls at the closest and yard the empties.

Imagine it however it suits you.

Just remember the long leg of the wye needs to be able to handle the length of your longest train. 6' would be good for the shelf. That's a full train that's short.

Having the service spurs in opposite directions will fit better and add play value by causing a train to change direction at the wye to service it.

Did you build a three switch wye or two switches and wye switch? A 3 switch solution is attached.
