That is a neat idea! I don't know if you have ever seen this site, but there are tons of pizzas here:
Gustav,
I second the reference to that Micro-layout web site. Lots of good ideas there.
Here is a little layout carved out of Styrofoam and built with removable scenery panels on a common base. It was billed as the "Layout for All Seasons" in a series of OGR articles I did a few years ago.

A few Years ago....
My God, Jim, has it already been years???
I have seen all but the first one before. I must have missed that one.
Love the work you did there.
I am just starting in O gauge 3 rail (been into z, ho, n, on30, and a little g), and whenever I see a layout like that, I always struggle to know if I want a large layout, or a micro. Or maybe I will build both!
i too am a fan of pizza layouts...
i've had an 0n30/HO 40" x 40" with an outer 18" R and a 15" R circle inside it for under the Christmas tree...
the one i'm trying to finish now is 36 1/2" square with an circle of 034 and 027...just about as small as you can get...it will be a photographic platform for my little glitter house and faux-litho tin projects plus a place to exercise my marx tin...
it's made from a cardboard crib box with 1 x 2 edge braces...and sits on a standard 34" square folding card table...not very impressive up against the room-filling layouts some forum members have...but it's all i need...it will hang on the wall in the shop when not in use...
i'd like to add i was greatly influenced by the work of members Djwebb1234 and Rustykamel...
my very best regards...
howard

I, too, have been inspired by Jim's work. I'm building one with an Area 51/Alien recovery scene, and plan to do a Christmas scene. Great idea!
Jim,
Whenever I visit the OGR office I get to see the layout you built and gave to Allan. I was just there today and even though I have seen it many times I still enjoy seeing it again and again.
Thank you for the kind words, guys.
Russell, hard to believe the first version of that layout was back in fall of 2009 (OGR Run 238).
I definitely enjoy building small layouts too. In fact, one of the last scenes added to my big layout is really a stand-alone layout in itself, and could be considered a pair of pizzas joined together.

Here's one I've been bouncing around as an idea for a coffee table. It's 4 feet in diameter and uses 21" radius (O-42) track. I'd probably use different signals to reduce the height and cover it with a glass top.

Jim,
Pinnacle Peaks is completly inspiring! Is there anywhere I can learn more about it?
Hey Gang,
Gustav, is trying to steal my thunder. Sawdust, Artie, and Matt, hang on to those track plans, you just might need them! (You will, I'm just not ready to announce the new forum con...er, that's all I'm letting out )

Benchwork construction as well as lots of photos of finished scenes were published in OGR magazine Run 258 (Aug/Sept 2012).
There will be another article about Pinnacle in the December issue (Run 260) explaining how the various rock formations were created.

Actually, my good friend, that rock formation article will be in the January issue. I ran out of space in the Dec. issue and also felt that having that article in January might be more useful to folks who get "inspired" over the holidays and decide to forge ahead with layout building or scenery enhancement.
Last month, while traveling to NH, I visited Jim's layout and got to see Pinnacle Peaks in person. What a sight. Great modeling. I'm looking forward to the new article.
Jim, my next article is also scheduled to be in the January issue.
Thanks, Bill. I certainly enjoyed showing it off to you.
Allan,
January sounds good to me. That means I have an extra month off before coming up with another article...right?

Nope!

Pizza layout? I never sausage a thing!
Details schmea-tales, just the contest specs and dates please. Otherwise the holidays will kick in and I'll have to decide between building and decorating.
I've been chomping at the bit to build a micro layout for my desk. This would get the CFO and Jr engineer-o excited to help.
Oh and thortrains.com has some great micro layout track plans too.

If someone wants to organize a "contest" focused on micro-layouts, I can assure you that I'll be delighted to feature the winning entry(s) in the magazine (which will earn the builder some bucks and some lasting recognition).
The cover feature of our December issue this year is the winning entry from the 2011 Christmas layout contest conducted by folks on this forum. Holiday theme contest or not, I hope that a good many of our forum members will submit photos (high-res please) of the holiday layouts they build this year so I'll have plenty to work with when the December 2013 issue is being planned. I can ALWAYS use a nice variety of holiday-theme layouts...individual shots or full features.
That said, a micro-layouts contest of some sort would also be a neat idea, be it based on a holiday theme or just an all-encompassing theme. There's plenty of opportunity for some very creative modeling in the construction of those tiny layouts, as anyone who has ever visited the Carl Arendt website (www.carendt.com) can readily confirm. Take a look if you haven't visited there before!
Let's make this great fun!
