I finished up my benchwork and laid homasote over top of my 8'X11' layout.  I applied some joint compound at the seams and will sand them next.

I intend to prime and then paint. Any recommendations on type of primer or paint to use? Ordinary latex? How about finish? I'm assuming a matte finish rather than semi-gloss or gloss, right?

Maiden voyage with homasote, so suggestions are welcome.

The joint sealer is not going to hide the joints for long. Homasote will expand and contract horizontally for a long time. Even sealing it on all edges and top and bottom will not stop it completely. Your best bet for a seam-sealer is a latex/silicon blend caulk. It is paintable, and it will stretch/contract with the Homasote.

I paint it with a flat finish paint, using the cheapest brand of latex paint I can find. Flat seems best to me, since it will be the base for all my ground cover. It will soak up a lot of paint.

I'll second the latex caulk for the seams.  If you are trying to seal the Homasote from moisture then shellac is your best bet followed by whatever paint you want for color.

I'll second this.  You can use shellac or go with Kiltz as it is a shellac based primer.
