One of my best running MTH engines (Premier PRR M-1b) has become a bit of a problem.  Initially, it would abruptly stop as part of a 2-loco lash up.  After this occurred a few times, I tried running the loco separately and the DCS screen reported that maintenance was required.  So I looked online and in Barry's current edition and followed the instructions - lube & oil and then selecting RESET under the MAINTENANCE softkey.  This didn't seem to fix the problem until I powered everything off and restarted a few times then things seemed to be back to normal for a few days.  But today, the loco would run as part of the lash up but without sound, headlight and other features.  And, when I addressed the loco separately via DCS, the system indicated that the loco could run another 990 miles until the next maintenance will be required.

Also, when I shut down the loco and the track power is still live, the loco will shut down and then oddly start playing sound (at reduced/noisy volume) and the cabin compartment light comes on.

Anyone have a suggestion.  Could it be the electronics are failing and, if so, are they diagnostic tests that I can run?

Thanks,

Tom

Is this maintenance needed message showing up in the handheld? I don't use the handheld remote anymore but I was beginning to wonder about maintenance. I have 4 premier engines that have recently gone over 1k but nothing comes up on the tablet indicating the need for any maintenance. My granddaughters imperial ES runs on her own 4x8 with the handheld and that same message came up there. Apparently it doesn't come up with the new app

I'd try a factory reset and then add it to the remote again and see if that gets it's mind right.

Thanks for the tip - good idea, but after resetting and adding the loco back it seems to be more dead than ever.  Guess I will need to take it to my local dealer (4 hours away - ugh) and have it checked out.  Maybe have a proto3 board added. Tom

Joe - the message showed up in the handheld remote.  BTW, I have used a tablet (iPad) too, but the current MTH software version doesn't support lashups, so I continue to use the handheld remote.  Great that your granddaughter has an interest in trains too.  Tom

When you address the engine what errors do you get? (if any?) Did you try resetting the sounds under the sound menu?

Tom Jasper.... Did you try the battery test? how long do sounds persist after a track power down?

Following the reset, the DCS found and added the engine.  Then, when I tried starting the engine, it said Check the Track.  Can't check the battery based on sound after power off because it presently won't start, but another great idea John.  I have an extra battery and will install it to see if it fixes the problem.

I think it's worth trying...Another option is a feature reset... However a good battery is  required to have it stick.

Menu/Advanced/ Reset engine/ feature reset/ This will not delete the engine from the remote.

Since you can add the engine , it makes me believe there's not too much wrong.

A small test track and a channel with a know good track signal helps .

just replaced the battery and a observed the following.  Initially, the engine started with all the normal sounds.  I noticed that the head light was not on.  So, I selected headlight on via the remote.   It wasn't immediately responsive.  After a few moments of back and forth, the head light and tail light responded normally.  Then, abruptly, the loco sound went silent.  I believe this behavior points to a defective ProtoSound 2 board.  Note that I previously reset the loco to factory settings.  So, I am planning to take the engine to a service station.  Any additional comments are appreciated.

thanks, tom
