This is freakin' cool.  If one of the O gauge manufacturers could figure out how to create some accessories or interfaces that involve programmable code and customization of the operating experience, I think that would be a big advancement in the hobby.  Lego is leading the way with this tech through their passenger and cargo trains

Sorry, I haven't seen the new Lego stuff. Actually everything you need is already available. The level of sophistication is up to you. The inputs and outputs on an Arduino module can be programmed to your heart's content. If you want to go bigger, try C/MRI and JMRI on a full sized computer.

I'm sure Professor Chaos will chime in on this. He has actually done this. I'm working on it with C/MRI and JMRI on my very large layout.
