I have what I would call a brand new PS3 Conrail SD80MAC http://mthtrains.com/20-20432-1

Cab #4114

She ran fine when I got her. I converted her to 2 rail and she still ran fine. She was left in the lead of a big consist. I upgraded the TIU to DCS version 5.0. I then tried running the consist and the lead engine (the PS3 SD80MAC) started up in conventional? I was having so many issues I put her on a shelf for figuring out later on. Well that day is here. She won't be found by the remote. She starts right up in conventional when other engines see the watchdog and stay quiet.

I tried running her in conventional to get a conventional reset in. She starts right up and runs backwards every time. I tried a reset when she was running but she ignores it. If I lower the voltage to 8.5 on the Z4000, she dims the headlights, turns on the interior lights, and sits there idling. As soon as the voltage is turned any higher, she runs in reverse. If I turn her around on the 2 rail track with AC power, she backs up the other way.

When I had a PS3 stuck in conventional reverse, I kept voltage to around 12 or 13, and held loco by hand to keep it from flying while I did the 1W 5B sequence with no TIU is circuit.  Given the precise timing required, I don't see how you can do it when loco is moving rapidly.

Well, it sure is worth a shot! I'll try it again.

It doesn't work in DCS command mode though. I'm not sure why yet. It is worth a shot!

Hi G,

With all of those MTH repairs that you loaded into that gorgeous Challenger's trunk at the school that we just finished, are you sure you have time to do 1 more repair. Lol. It was great going to dinner with you & Steve and getting to put a face to a name, although, as I told you, thought you were much older than I envisioned. It was  a pleasure to meet you! Hey! I got a 93 on the quiz...was shocked!!!

Thanks John!  Joe,  My point is:  If it moves "Immediately" as power is applied that is more likely a shorted motor wire or a shorted motor fet.  If it thinks for a momement after power is applied, and doesn't start moving until it starts up, that is more likely a "Locked" in a direction issues.  Hence "Exactly" how it behaves helps determine what is wrong.  If you can't do the reset, try the unlock sequence.  I do this a about 8-9V which doesn't give the motor much voltage to run.  G

No, I explained it wrong above G.

After a few seconds of applying power in command, it powers up and sounds start, the lights switch out to run mode and she starts moving. She was leading a consist so the others stayed quiet and did not move. They kept her from moving, and she just spun her wheels. I put her on the track alone and she still fired right up. I killed power before watching what she'd do on her on.

I get frustrated that it's missing the watchdog and I did not wait to see what she would do totally. I keep killing the power. So I didn't even see if she ran forward or reversed. I need to try again.

OK here goes. I probably won't explain it right.

No matter which way the engine was put on the 2 rail track it ran backwards. So I put it on facing backwards to pull the cars already on the track. The trouble with that was the horn and bell buttons on the Z4000 were reversed. When the engine pointed the other way, they were correct.

So I was trying to force a reset, by using the bell and several horn buttons. I tried it the other way with the horn and five bells, but that didn't work either.

It finally dawned on me to try getting the horn and bell to work correctly first.

The trouble now is, that I did not wait for the engine to fully start up. As it would play the start up sounds, I immediately pushed the horn and five bells. The engine accepted the reset this time and sounded. After cycling the power, it now runs correctly!

So I need to see if the remote can now find it. I swear, it got messed up by the upgrading of the TIU to an already built consist. I believe that any old consists must be rebuilt to save this trouble. I also believe that the newer versions of DCS are struggling to get the directions and engine lighting features, sorted out. I am not trying to do any bashing. I should not have to go thru all this struggle after simply upgrading my DCS.

Now there are many DCS users and maybe if it is just me, I am dead wrong with my beliefs!

I also hope this post can help others out.

I just tried to use this engine now with DCS after unlocking it from being stuck in reverse. Somehow when I upgraded my TIU and remote, this engine in the lead position of a consist, got locked in conventional mode and in reverse.

On first power up with DCS, the engine started right up? At least this time, it did not move. I tried to use the remote to talk to it, it read out engine not on track?

So I pressed the read button, and it then located the engine. It's still on the same TIU it has always been on? Anyways, I pressed start up even though it was running. The sound got louder and the engine fully responded to any remote commands. I finally pressed shut down after running her.

I then cycled the power just to test, and this time the engine stayed quiet????? At least she now runs without spending any money!! Yahoo!~
