So I found that If I pass my pointer OVER ALL THE POST HEADLINES it will highlight the ones I have already looked at. IF I go slow enough enough to catch it. Not very convenient, but its a start. Why couldnt the headline be highlighted automatically just because I'm signed in?
I'm hopeful these problems will be solved within a week. This is hard to use effectively till then.

Take a look over at the right of each topic. There's a double arrow icon and a "NEW" just below the arrow. If you've already viewed a topic AND there hasn't been a reply since you last viewed the "NEW" will not appear.
I hope the color change after viewing can also be adjusted. That was a nice quick visual on the old forum to help find the topics you were following.
Thanks Dave, that might be part of the solution, but it seems that its only part of it. The new seems to point to topics that were added since I last logged on that have a new answer. We need to get a color change on the background for viewed topics, regardless of age and reply.
I'm still holding my breath.
It wouldn't be too bad if the memory wasn't doing whatever its doing, I forget.
