Jim - My mainlines are 4 1/2" apart and I am using all Atlas track. My crossovers are all done with Atlas #5's, which also provides the same 4 1/2" spacing.
Gargraves track with 072 & 080 curves, 6" track centers everywhere, Ross Reg 11 degree turnouts for the cross overs and sidings. Also have 072, 080, and 096 switches.
Our mainline tracks at 5" to 5 1/8" center-to-center, in order to allow for 21" scale length passenger cars, as well as large articulated steam locomotive models. All the main line Atlas turnouts are those #5, or #5.5 (whatever Atlas call them), the same as Art has on his layout.
The longest train I have is a 17 inch long BMT Standard subway car. My subways never conform to standard railroad conventions. My layout runs from 3 3/4 center line to around 4 1/8. A little wider around turns and much larger in center platform stations (6 1/4). Closeness is accomplished using Atlas O54 turnouts. My train yard is very close, 3 inch center line to center line. I use these trains as my baseline for determining clearances and they work fine at these distances. The longest subway car would be the 75 footers which have not been produced. They would be nearly 19 inches long and I am not sure if they would clear each other on turns.
