I am in the process of repainting a Lionel Prewar (4-wheel) 805 box car.

This car has a lot of pieces and finished the repaint and doing a reassembly.

The question that I have is on the brake wheels supports that anchors it to the side of the box car.

If you can notice from the picture that each brake wheel supports has a large hole on one side and a small hole on the other.

Just trying to figure which hole is on top.

I believe it is the large hole is on top as the small hole is on the bottom. This will stop the wheel from dropping down and the large hole on the top will allow to mount the Brake wheel mount first then insert your brake wheel and shaft and put the end of the brake wheel shaft in the frame, then crimp.

This will allow the brake wheel not to drop down or to get pulled off.

Please let me know if this is correct.

Just to let you know, I had to mount this with the large hole on top. Reason is that there are several type of brake wheel for this car and the on that I have is a two piece brake wheel plus the shaft. This has to be assembled with the shaft in (shaft has a bend by the brake wheel) the soldered on the bottom of the brake wheel. The I put the notch in and was unable to put the small hole in first as it would not pass the notch. Maybe Lionel put the notch on after the side support wad put on. Anyway it looks good and no one will notice.
