The original railroad operated by the Kentucky & Indiana Terminal Railroad Company, was a double-track, standard-gauge, terminal, and switching railroad, located in Indiana and Kentucky. The mileage aggregates 8.298 miles of road, with 8.178 miles of second main track, and consists of two connected main lines with an important bridge spanning the Ohio River. One section extends from New Albany, Ind., across the Ohio river, to Seventh and Magnolia Streets in Louisville, Ky., and the other is located within the city of Louisville, Ky., and runs from a connection with the first mentioned line at Thirtieth and High Streets to Thirteenth and Canal Streets.
The Ohio River bridge and approaches were equipped with 5-foot gauge gauntlet tracks in addition to the standard-gauge railroad tracks. The gauntlet tracks, comprising 1.264 miles of first main and 1.060 miles miles of second main tracks and 0.051 mile of yard tracks and sidings, were originally leased for exclusive use to the trolley line - Louisville and Northern Railway and Lighting Company, now abandoned. Currently used by Norfolk Southern, there is a proposal for light rail to return onto this bridge.
The K&IT is owned by the Norfolk Southern Railroad, and was originally owned by the Southern Railway Company, The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, and the Monon/Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railway Company, jointly, through ownership of its entire capital stock.
The K&IT owned 5 Fairbanks-Morse H 10-44 diesel locomotives built for the K&IT in 1949. All were retired by November 1973. This MTH custom run for Pat's Trains is the first O gauge 3-rail locomotive offered for this interesting short line railroad.
