I was at a dinner Monday night of the Pittsburgh Area S Gaugers and a member brought a radio controlled American Flyer S gauge steam engine that he had assembled. It was powered with a Timko 5 pole can motor, no gears, a flywheel in the cab where the AF motor would be. In the tender were four 4 volt rechargeable batteries wired in series.  He had put together  hand held radio control. It was simple-forward an reverse but said that he could have up to 12 functions if he wanted. The batteries were for an  RC heliocopter. It was amazingly smooth starting with several cars behind it, way aster than you need and powerful. The wheels would spin before it would stall. He had it at the Pgh. Science Center show before Xmas an ran it two days on one charge. A perfect set up for a Lionel 671-681-682 steam turbine engine. So I am going to look for a junker for this guy to power for me. He ia also working on a G gauge set up.  Stay tuned.
