After reading a couple of thoughtful and very useful replies (thank you!), I realized that I had used an incorrect term.  I should have used "walk through" (as Mianne uses the term) rather than "around the room" layout.

I am in my fifties, do not have flexibility or dexterity, and have no interest in "ducking" <grin>.

Due to the small size of the room (I can't believe I'm writing that, since I never imagined having this much room to run trains!) am I better off trying to convince my wife to have a ceiling layout in her sewing room (26' x 15') for the MTH Challenger, and run the smaller stuff in my train room?  (Never mind on the ceiling layout in the sewing room - I just asker her, and it was vetoed.  [She even made the blasphemous suggestion of selling it if its too big]).

John,

I think this is the largest O72 folded dogbone that you can fit in your room.  It assumes that your bench moves to the right side and fits under the track.  Smaller radii curves would reduce the loops.  You could fit an O63 loop inside to give you an double mainline.

Many people on this forum have stated you should use the larges radius (diameter) curves you can fit.  Large curves allow you to run the longer locomotives and cars, looks better, and derailings are fewer.
