So, in his book about getting started with Lionel layouts, Roland mentions he had a 5 x 8 portable layout that breaks down into two separate modules.  This idea is attractive to me because I want to recreate a Lionel dealer display layout that is 5 x 9 (D264), have limited space for much larger that that, but I have some questions about it.  First, does anyone have any pictures of Roland's layout?  It seems like he was fairly well recognized in the hobby and I would think there should be some pictures of his layout available somewhere, but I can't find them.  I guess one of the main questions I have is: can you only connect two modular layouts if the track is going horizontally across the two modules?  What if you have a switch or piece of track that is running perpendicular on the table, how would that connect up?  How big of a hassle is it to disassemble and reassemble a portable layout?  Lastly, my other thought is possibly to create a tilt table and just keep the layout in one piece.  Any thoughts about that?  Thank you for all your thoughts and wisdom!!!!

Dizzyrizzy,

You can connect most anything across modules, but you will not be happy if the fit isn't perfect, making the use of the modules a chore/pain.  Thus, most make an effort to keep the connections as few and as straight as possible.  A tilting train board would also work if you were careful about the connections of track and accessories to the board and careful with the mechanism to tilt and to stay level during operation.  Have you considered a pulley system to hoist the board near the ceiling if you only want the layout available part time?
