My concern is rust in my high humidity salt air environment. Fastrak rusts for me, so I purchased simple loops of Atlas and Realtrax - so far no rusting with these.
Now considering a few switches, but the supply of Atlas switches is very poor, and I see some negative posts about Realtrax switches.
So I was thinking Ross, but couldn't find any reference to the type of rail used, nickel silver, steel, plated steel, or stainless steel. I suspect it's plated steel...

Were the folks at Ross not able or willing to tell you? I would imagine that the material is tinplated steel, unless otherwise stated in their literature.
I did some research for you:
"All of our switches and track are constructed by hand, using tinplated STEEL rail for magnetraction capability and real WOODEN TIES."
is what it states on their website.
Thanks for the research - I must have read that but was hoping for a different outcome... 
I revisited their site and found this as well:
"Our track and switches are made with roll formed tinplated steel rail on the outside rails and roll formed oxidized steel rail for the center rail."
If you check the Gargraves site there are listings for Stainless steel track sections and switches. In most cases the blacked center rail is galvanized plate.
