Have not had any pesonal experience* with Atlas track but was quite impressed with Cesar's quite large layout recently. He used all Atlas equipment and reported having no problems with it.

I've noticed that occasionally someone will mention using Ross switches with Atlas track and I'm wondering why?  Are Atlas switches deficient in some way?  The obvious difference in appearance would seem to preclude using the otherwise excellent Ross switches. What is the reason some will use them?

* Other than having a few pieces of the sectional track and a couple of switches on hand. They appear very solid and well made. Impressive!

I have Ross switches in my tinplate layout and Atlas on my hirail style layout. both are quite reliable, but the Atlas can sometimes be electrically problematic,as the jumpers used for center rail/ point rail continuity can burn out from shorts. Ross uses heavier wire.  The switch machines used by Ross are more reliable than the twin coil ones used by Atlas-- they are also lots smaller. I do like the solid rail of Atlas, but I also like Ross.

The Rail profiles of Atlas and Ross are  almost identical--- and Ross mates very well with Atlas using Atlas rail joiners. i'm sure that you will get other opinions---

There were a couple of issues with the older Atlas turnouts. The wiring the joined the center rails together was too small and/or came disconnected (minor -- just connect additional feeds), the switch machines (if you lean on the button you'll melt them, which also applies to MTH ScaleTrax turnouts), and the availability of various configurations.

The Ross turnouts are smooth, easy to work with, work very reliably and are available in more sizes than anyone else's turnouts.

There are Atlas to Ross Conversion track pins designed for such. I tried this and the track pins were way too delicate. I did not like the transition and later bought atlas switches. I just happened to have a few extra Ross switches so my only loss was-the track pins.  The Atlas switches run just fine.
