Lots of expert, professional modelers use Scaletrax as it is most protypical. Atlas has a large fan base. Ross has great switches. Take your pick. Then, again lots of people still use Lionel tubular track.

Each track system has its pluses and minuses. Atlas has a good variety of sectional track available but the flex track is hard to work with. Ross has the greatest variety and quality of switches available and is designed to mate with Gargraves track but some don't like the oversized ties. ScaleTrax is the closest to scale 3 rail track system, but the switches need inspection and an occasional tune up before installation. ScaleTrax flex track is truly flexible. However, it requires skills and tools more like those commonly used with HO or two rail O track.
My brother Dave is building a very large three rail O scale layout with ScaleTrax. Dave has developed many techniques for working with ScaleTrax. He authored an article on working with ScaleTrax in OGR Run 251 and is giving a clinic on ScaleTrax in the MTH booth at York this coming Friday.
To read more about the Northwest Trunk Lines and see ScaleTrax on a layout take a look at this thread.

If you are considering using ScaleTrax I highly recommend Rich Battista's videos of His Black Diamond Railway. They are full of easy to understand instructions for working with ScaleTrax as well as other elements of layout construction.

Good information, Have one question when connecting lengths of Scaletrax Flex together how do you do it? A picture of it would be nice.
