sounds like you are using a plan that utilizes Lionel 027, but want to build with Atlas. Can be done, but won't mach up 1 for 1 on the sizes. If you know anyone with RRT software share the plan with them and have them design with the Atlas track. If you have the plan digitally (scan it and make a jpeg if you can) and post it here. Lot's of people will offer a hand.

lionel O27 full straight is 8.75" Half straight 4.8" measurements from RR-Track.
Atlas O has 5.5" and 4.5" straights. So it would be close, but it will not be an exact fit. The only way would be to custom cut an Atlas 10" straight to the Lionel O27 lengths--- this is doable with a fine tooth hacksaw,/dremel, etc.
adendum: be aware that a lot of the longer rolling stock and engines will not operate well, if at all on O27 curves.
If you can post the track plan, I will see if I can convert it to atlas for you.
You might want to invest in a jeweler's saw and some good blades. You're often better off custom-cutting down a longer piece of track than using two short pieces for a particular length as you'll have fewer track joints where you get voltage drops.
Track can be cut with a hacksaw as well (wrap with masking tape first.) To use the joiners, all you need to do is cut the tie strips under the rail and move the rails back 1/4"
