Been tinkering around trying to make some simulated steel slab loads for semi's & gondola's. This is my first shot so far.

Another option Jeff is find some old Athearn HO scale cars from the 60's & 70"s at a swap meet for cheap. They used sheet steel weights that mounted under the floor of the car and also rusted just like the prototype. Just saw off the ends with the bolster holes and you have some new slabs. I believe Tyco also had some, but they were usually truncated versions.

Before you overload the gondolas and trailers calculate the weight of the steel you are planning to carry. Steel weighs around 500 pounds per cubic foot.

When you load the steel be sure that there is sufficient blocking so the steel can be lift off when it arrives at its destination.

Jeff,

You did a great job with those slabs. They look like they came right out of the mill. The color looks like something from the old US Steel Mill in Gary Indiana or Lukens Steel in Coatsville, Pa.

Thanks everyone for the comments, this was a fun easy project. The hardest part to me was trying to get the color of the slabs in the ball park!!
