It's a big'un.

The other night I noticed that none of the online tables for FasTrack had the new 3" piece included. I wanted to see what it could be used for, just in case if I ever actually find one in a store. That desire for knowledge lead me down the rabbit hole of creating a new and improved FasTrack list that could answer the question  "How many pieces of track would I need, if I really needed a 30" section of track and only had 1 3/8" and 1 3/4" pieces of track available" (The answer is 18 -1 3/8" and 1- 1 3/4" pieces).

So here is my ultimate FasTrack Size Table with the 4,618 possible combinations of FasTrack from zero to 30 inches, all in a convenient 93 page long pdf file. Don't worry it's sorted by section length and then number of pieces needed for each length. I am pretty sure I didn't miss any combinations, but if one of your favorites is missing, please let me know.

Many electrons, brains cells, and cans of Mountain Dew gave their all to create this list, so only use the knowledge contained in it for good.  If anyone wants to build all these to verify them, I suggest getting outside more often.

Thanks

Chris

PS Now if Lionel would only make a 1 3/16 or 1 1/16th FasTrack section, then I could make some serious track combinations!

So, I was working on converting this into a Google Sheet with just the most efficient combinations, and I think we can do better. Very few combinations listed use the 10-inch straight. It's not too bad once you reach 17.375, but there's a plethora of combinations that could use it before that (ie 1.375+10 for 11.375). I'll try to correct this for my version.

Also, since the longest impossible length is 5.625 inches, it might be useful to stop at 35.625 inches instead of at 30. Though I'd be shocked if the most efficient thing is anything other than 25.625's combination with a 10-inch.

Here's my Google Sheet of Most Efficient Combinations. Rows in yellow weren't in OP's original. I only went up to 20, because 18.375 is the last MEC that doesn't use a 10-inch straight; if you need anything between 20.125 and 35.625, simply adding one or two 10-inch pieces to the matching shorter combination will be most efficient. Enjoy!

I recently did the same thing!  Curious what you wrote it in.  I did mine in bash.
