Hi Guys,

I’ve been a member of the Forum for a number of years and have read many posts from the talented individuals here chronicling the creation of some amazing layouts.  This Forum has provided me with a lot of great information including my introduction to York.  I didn’t even know what York was until I read about it here and as a result just returned from my third one!!

I’m ready to start the design phase my layout (Atlas Track and Switches with some Ross) and have an RR-Track (version 5) I am posting with the hope that someone will give me some design tips for the space I have.  I have struggled with the track plan trying to incorporate the things that I wanted to include, double track, long run, grades under 2% but I’m not that proficient with designing and could use any advice and insight you might have.

The area to the right where the Red and Blue loops are stacked I had envisioned as being a city setting, the area in Blue is the lower level (At Approx 41.50 height), Pink is the grade to the Red upper level (54 or 55 inches).  The Grade would actually start just after the two (Pink Bridges) and clear the first pair of tracks at about 6.5 to 7 inches, then continue to slowly climb so that there is at least 6.5 to 7 inches of clearance at each point where tracks cross over.  I tried to figure the Grades but was having a lot of issues with that feature of the RR Track software but I believe they should be less than 2%.

Ignore the double track wye sitting in what is actually the garage.  I could not figure out how to incorporate it into this since the track spacing was wider than 4.5 inches.  The green highlighted scissors wye is supposed to lift up to allow access.   The center rail to center rail spacing in 4.5 for this, although I would prefer 4 inches on the parallel straight tracks I could not figure out how to space it that was and maintain the 4.5 on the curves.  I run modern engines and that spacing seemed to work.

I have not included any industry tracks yet as I was waiting to finalize the main lines so any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Thanks for including the RRTrack file. I was able to open it up and take a closer look.

I agree about the round house location. Just because it can "fit" doesn't mean it works. You'd have it surrounded by elevated tracks. It would be very difficult to work with it and ensure that engines are tracking as you expect.

I also noticed the use of the crossing on the elevated portion leading into the stub yard. That seems like an awkward application. Is there any way to remove it and run straight in?

Lastly, you have lots of track running directly over a lot of other track, plus overhead tracks crossing those below at very oblique angles. I see this as a problem when you go to build the table work that's going to support the elevated tracks. Pay attention to what you see in the 3D version. Rotate it around and try to imagine the kind of scenery that's going to surround all of that track.

I just finished my layout operationally tonight and was playing with getting trains in and out of the yard. Since it's a new alignment from my previous versions it's going to take a lot of practice to get it right. Your layout is significantly more complicated than mine so I expect that operations is going to be very challenging.

Have you built a large layout before? Are you going to have help? If not, you've got a lot of work ahead of you. You can also run RRTrack in the simulation mode. That will give you another look at operations so you can make changes before you cut wood, lay track and run wires.

Thanks for the feedback Trainman!

I’ve enjoyed following your thread here on the forum.  I have built a large layout but that was over 10 years ago in HO.  This would be my first in O-Gauge.  When I purchased this home 10 years ago the intention was to fill the basement with a new HO layout.  At that time I came upon some Lionel O-Gauge and never looked back.  I’ve been collecting O-Gauge trains for the last 10 years and so it’s definitely time to build this layout.

I will take your advice and start looking at the 3 D model in RR-Track.  Once I come up with some revisions I will post them.

Thanks,

Post
