I often see a second set of rails in between the regular rails that trains roll on. They may go a few hundred feet and then merge together. What are these for?

Well, I tried to post a link twice, both times, worked fine by itself, but when I clicked on it in my reply, it took me to handrails on stairs. If you search railroad guard rails on track, you should get a link that is not about stairwells.
This keeps taking me to stairwells, maybe it will work for you, or copy and paste it on the address bar and try it:

AHA! It has something to do with the (rail_transport) part of the link not working in this reply, but works fine if you copy and paste the whole thing in the address bar.

No answer yet, still looking for a working link.
