put it together and attach the transformer, take the shell off the loco and lube it according to the manufacturer's recommendations (oil the axles and the roller pickups, grease the gears and if it's postwar, oil the bushings where the armature shaft sticks through the case). put a drop of oil in the axle ends, put the train on the track and have fun!
a bit more specific advice would be possible given the following...
1) who is the manufacturer?
2) when was it produced?
3) has it ever been run and if so, for how many years?
4) how long has it been in storage?
5) how was the quality of the storage? (damp basement, hot attic, climate controlled, etc)
Before you put any MTH trains on the track and put the power to them, deal with the charge status of the batteries. Do not try to run them with low or dead batteries or damage could be done to the processors.
