I am finalizing a train shelf layout and was wondering what the recommended distance from track to the actual wall is? I know legacy models can swing out a few inches but how many inches is the question! Want to have enough room for the biggest of boys when and not limit myself because of space.

I see a lot of info saying 4.5inches to be safe but I will only have a single line running on the shelf. No plans for double lines.

Thanks,

Joe

A suggestion without mind-bending geometry calculations ...

In a 90-degree corner of a room, place a quarter circle of the brand of track you intend to use - plus a few straights at both ends.  Place your largest loco on the quarter curve, and move it along the rails.  Move the entire track section away from the wall until there's sufficient clearance all around the corner, plus a smidgen for safety.  Measure that distance and apply it to your layout.

You may get mathematically intense but accurate formulas from other OGR FORUM-ites who performed better in math class than I did. Maybe you too.

Carry on, regardless ...

That's how I laid out my original layout.  I took the largest overhang engine and passenger car and dry rolled them around the outside loop and secured the track as I went along.  Then I left those on the outside loop and put another engine and passenger car on the next loop in and checked for interference between those two track..  I felt better about that than trusting my math calculations.
