So I recently purchased a CW 80 transformer on eBay. It powers up and runs my Thomas the Train in forward. The direction button only momentarily throws the train in neutral, and then it proceeds to run forward again. The whistle button works, but the direction button won't keep the train in neutral, nor will it run in reverse. Is this a common issue, and can I fix it easily? I really only need this transformer to run LionChief trains, so the direction button shouldn't be an issue with this transformer, unless this indicates a serious issue overall that needs to be looked at. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Another thing I noticed is that when I connect it to a multimeter it reads 19.3 V no matter whether the lever is at 0% or 100%. That holds true for both the train and accessory leads. On the other hand, the MRC 1301 transformer I also just received reads 0.4V at 0% and goes to 22.3 V at 100% (and 24.5V when the boost is pushed). Is this reason for concern for the Lionel CW 80?

And one last thing. Tried reversing the A/U leads, no effect.  I did make one interesting discovery though. I derailed the train by accident, and when I put it back on, it would only run in reverse. I derailed it again, and it was stuck in neutral. I derailed it a third time, and again ... forward only. Is this a voltage issue? Could I throw a switch (maybe a push button that defaults to the "on" position) between the transformer and the track that could control direction? Like I said, it's going to run LionChief trains, so it may never be used conventionally.

This is normal with this locomotive and transformer.

The CW type transformers(PowerMax 30/40, & CW 80 watts) don't really go to zero volts at no load, so there needs to be a load, like a bulb, for the reverse to cycle properly.

Lionel provided a special power track section with a light bulb pilot light embedded in the FasTrack roadbed for these Thomas style train outfits.

You can use an illuminated caboose or car, or connect an accessory like a lighted station to the tracks.

Thank you!  Are you referring to the FasTrack LionChief Terminal Track section (6-37110), or is there something different? Probably the easiest thing is to grab an illuminated caboose.

Something different. It was made available at Lionel Value Added dealers to customers who complained about the set performance.

Ok. I'll hunt around, and inquire at my LHS.  Seems best bet is to just attach an illuminated caboose for now. I appreciate all the help!
