I still have them.  I can break off the engines by remote but I still need a way to break a car out of a consist.

 

I have mine on the main before stub sidings so I can break off a car and push it onto the siding.  That lets me have a relatively short stub but it does "foul the main".  I also have them on either end of my passing siding.

I too place at beginning of sidings. I also place near work areas and coaling area for dump cars. I had a couple on longer straight track sections just for swapping engines. I removed all of them when I went to Legacy combined with DCS. For some reason I would occasionally get shorts and derailments on uncoupling tracks. I'm quite happy they are all gone. Ton of wiring and buttons to work them all gone also. Cleaned things up nicely.
