If you type "Tortoise" in the SEARCH option of the forums, you will find tons and tons of information on them. This topic has been discussed many times, and there are a lot of videos of YouTube with How To's as well.

I have used VDC Tortoise on all my layouts since 1992. On a large layout that I dismantled in '09 I controlled 28 via the Cab 1 remote linked to ASCs with AC rectified with diodes.

Currently on a small round-the wall attic layout I use direct control of 17 via toggles and power the motors with a 12VDC wall wart transformer.
