Hi,

I recently purchased a set of 5 NYC heavyweight passenger cars. They are dark green and the numbers range from 2732 to 2738.

Does any one know the actual time period these were made?

The cars are well made with the exception of the couplers. It would have been nice if they made them self-centering and opening. Are there any sort of conversion couplers out there?

Thank you in advance.

Williams started making 'Madison' cars around 1978.  Early one had to be assembled, either by the seller or the buyer.  There was really nothing wrong with the couplers, they just did not operate.  If you were playing with trains in that time period, you were thrilled to get them.  The Lionel 'Madison' cars from the 50's were very expensive and hard to come by.  I think it was around 1987 when Madison cars were available with modern fast angle wheel sets and centered couplers. It is probably easier and cheaper to just buy a later set.  The ones sold as, 'Custom Trains' in the late 80's were really nice cars.

In case you were referring to K-Line 'Heavyweight' cars, they appeared around 1989.  I believe their couplers were centered.
